<インターネット・ポップス解説より>　ニール・セダカの復活作。70年代ポップスの名曲！

  60年代から活躍している大御所。モンキーズにも楽曲を提供しています。
その2曲とは、あのキャロル・ベイヤーとの共同作品の「恋のノッキング」（モンキーズの「More of the Monkees」に収録）と「恋の思い出」（同「Instant Replay」に収録）であり、2曲とも隠れた名曲です。

  ニール・セダカは60年代後半から70年代前半までは人気が下火となってました。
  そこに飛び出したビックヒット！！

 「Laughter in the rain」、邦題「雨に微笑みを」が1974年に見事に全米No.1を獲得します。
  この曲、イントロのピアノから気分をワクワクさせてくれます。そして見事なサビ。70年代の王道のポップスですね。朝目覚めの1曲という感じです。
  バックはDANNY KORTCHMAR、LELAND SKLAR、RUSS KUNKEL等、ジェームステイラーのバックを務めるセクションの面々。こうしたポップス（MOR）がAORへ向かう直前の音ですね。

  この時代、二ールはカーペンターズに「Solitaire」を提供したり、キャプテン＆テニールに全米No.1となった「Love Will Keep Us Together」を提供したりと、クオリティの高いポップスを生み出していきます。

  また1976年には、自らの60年代のヒット曲である「悲しき慕情（Breaking Up is Hard to Do）」（典型的なゴールデンポップスソング）を、思いっきりスローに、そしてジャージーにセルフ・カバーしてます。これは見事なカバーで、聞き惚れてしまいます。

  当時はカーペンターズと交流があったこと、またエルトン・ジョンのレコードレーベルから作品を発表していたことから、そういったポップスの影響を受けていたのでしょう。また、二ールのもともとのポップス・センスが70年代のポップスと合致したのかもしれませんね。
